The Epicurean takes inspiration from all four corners of the globe. But what exactly can you expect to find?

Nestled atop Brown Hart Gardens in Mayfair, The Epicurean is a pop-up café and deli run by Nikolaus A Greig. Glass walls mean customers feel as though they’re sitting in the garden when they visit. As Nikolaus puts it: “it’s a little Oasis off Oxford Street”.

It is a relaxed affair. Beautiful artisan cakes and breads are displayed, alongside Mediterranean fare such as olives, prosciutto and jamón ibérico. “We’ve also got wine here,” says Nikolaus. “Mostly French, but we’ve got some New World bottles too.”

The café-cum-deli was borne from street food markets put on by The Epicurean events company, and a desire to bring this to a fixed location. “We have five international food markets,” Nikolaus says. “Each vendor we host brings something different. Well-sourced ingredients and produce is paramount to our ethos. It’s nice for customers to try it.”

Artisan pâtissiers bake the café’s stunning cakes, while experienced chefs whip up the savoury offerings.

“Our new chef, Patrick George, is internationally inspired,” Nikolaus explains. “This means our menus feature a mixture of tagines, curries, Malaysian and pan-Pacific dishes. We’ve also had Korean barbecue.”

“Patrick likes to try different things and this goes hand-in-hand with what we want to offer.”

The team is small. Run by just five people, including the chef and expert barista, there is a lot on offer for such a small group.

As with any good café, Nikolaus changes the menu based on the season. The Epicurean works closely with Natura to have seasonal vegetables delivered when they’re at their best. “Natura also offers a lot of sea vegetables, which we will try to use in our menus in the future,” he says.

It’s clear that fine produce is so important to Nikolaus and the team at The Epicurean. From single-roast Brazilian coffee supplied by Chapter Coffee Co. to beautiful cakes and breads, the quality is of a gold-star standard. “Offering a fantastic coffee product is so important to us and our barista is terrific,” says Nikolaus.

When he’s not providing visitors to Mayfair with excellent brunches, lunches and coffee, where does Nikolaus like to go on his days off? “I like the boutiques in Mount Street,” he says. “Curzon Street is nice. The restaurants are great around here – there are quite a few Michelin stars in these streets around if you added them all up!”
